Vandalism in recent weeks

Friday, 22 July 2005

I have been very disappointed with the developments in the village over the last few weeks. The damage caused to the children's play area, the lighting for the all weather surface, windows broken at the school, the turning over of the cricket store shed, damage to the cricket wicket and in my opinion worst of all, the taking of the skip from the social club and igniting it on the children's play area are very worrying. However I am sure that someone in the village knows who is responsible and I would urge them to contact me. Having had very few problems in the village over the last few years I would like to deal with those who feel it necessary to spoil the village in this selfish way. We need your help - If you see damage within the village please call the Police and if it is happening at the time ring 999. Despite a reluctance to come forward and give statements from members of the public, in my experience reprisals are very very rare, on the contrary vandals are less likely to visit that area again if they know they are going to be reported. The situation regarding dealing with anyone for vandalism now is as follows: In nearly all circumstances the offender will be arrested and taken to the police station, they will be fingerprinted, photographed and have their DNA taken. The decision will then be made as to what further action is taken. They could be reprimanded/ finally warned or put before the court. There are signs of an increase in the amount of young people drinking around the green areas and all weather pitch - we will be stepping up patrols within the village. Alcohol will be confiscated from young persons and their parents will be contacted. CCTV footage will be monitored. If you have teenagers/young adults I would again ask you to remind them of their responsibilities and the need to respect their community. I can be contacted at Histon Police Station on 0845 456 4564 or email chris.bradley@cambs.pnn.police.uk Amie can be contacted on amie.meston@cambs.pnn.police.uk You can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 Chris Bradley - Community Beat Officer Amie Meston - Community Support Officer
