Update from the Millennium Planning GroupFriday, 05 March 1999 Thank you to all of you who entered the logo competition, and to those of you who came to the Christmas bazaar and voted for the designs. The Community Association thought it was important that the design of this logo represented the whole village and no one section of it. h3. Hardwick Millennium logo Thanks to Thelma Westbury, Helen Jones, and Andy Smith for help in the final design. The logo incorporates the design of the village sign, to represent the whole of the village community. You may be interested to know how the Village sign came to be, and its meaning. h3. The village sign The village sign was designed and funded by a joint group from the village, made up from the WI, The Community Association, and the Parish Council. Designs were requested from the village, and the suggestions were put together to create a design to represent village life. The sign was made by Steven Harris of Trumpington, who was well known and had made several other village signs. There is a large Stone at the base of the village sign which is the village Pound Stone. The Pound Stone was the place to pay your money and reclaim any animals which had been impounded in the village. The apple shape of the sign and the apple tree at the centre represents the apple orchards that once surrounded the village, and the roads in the village named after varieties of apples. The trunk of the tree, the blossom and leaves represent the continuing cycle of natural life. The sheep and the shepherd's crook represent the flocks that were once herded around Hardwick. The name of the village is believed to be derived from the old English of Herd to mean a herd or flock, wick or wyk was dwelling or village. The church represents the spiritual life of the village and the man, woman, boy and girl represent the family life of the village. The wording underneath the sign is in Latin, and translates to mean 'The best comes from the old and the new,' showing that the village community draws from both old and new villagers. If you go and look at the sign you will see that underneath the apple are two hands to symbolise the caring of members of the village for each other. h3. Millenium events In the planning of events for the millennium the Community Association has tried to reflect the wishes of the village. We know that many individuals and organisations will be planning events, and I am sure that the year 2000 will be a very busy, but enjoyable year. The Community Association hope that all organisations within the village will use the Millennium diary, to help plan events and to publicise them. It is not intended to book any of the premises within the village but to provide a central list of the activities planned for the year. If you have any comments please contact Jane Muncey tel 210 570. Anyone within the village will be welcome to the next meeting of the planning group to be held on Monday March 15th 8.00 p.m. in the Community Room at the school.Next: Hardwick Millennium preparations continue Previous: Hardwick 2000 update |
