Parish Council action on Hardwick roads

Monday, 23 March 2009

For many years now, parking outside our village shop has been a problem and it has been a priority of the Parish Council to try to ameliorate the situation.  The shop, with its Post Office, is a great asset to the village and we are lucky to have it, but ways of getting traffic safely past it have to be found.

Over the past 3 or 4 years, your Parish Council has had 4 schemes drawn up which have been passed onto the Highways Department, but they have all been turned down.  It was therefore decided that a meeting should be held between representatives of the Parish Council, Jim Stewart, South Cambridgeshire District Councillor, Fiona Whelan, Cambridgeshire County Councillor, Andrew Lansley, Member of Parliament, a Representative from the Highways Department and Tejinder Bhachu from the shop.  At this meeting all parties agreed that something must be done and Andrew Lansley said that he would contact the County Council and push things along on behalf of the villagers of Hardwick.

Caroline Chivers of Chivers Farms had agreed, a long while ago, that her company would very kindly donate land in the field opposite the shop so that it could be used for any road widening that was necessary.  Recently, Councillor Whelan and I have had a meeting with Caroline so that Cllr. Whelan could be brought fully up to date with Chivers' kind proposal.

Now, "all of this is very well but how soon will something be done?", I can hear some of you saying and I am afraid that I do not have the answer to that at this time.  But you can rest assured that ALL your democratically elected Councillors and Member of Parliament are trying their hardest to push things along.  It is most important that in the interests of safety, convenience, accessibility, retention of the village store/post office, local residents and the passage of traffic through the village that something be done.

As soon as the Parish Council have any further information on this matter, I will get it to you via the Hardwick Happenings.

There is one other thing that I would like to inform you about.  The Deputy Chairman of the Parish Council and myself are soon to be trained in the use of a radar speed gun under the County Council and the Cambridgeshire Police initiative of SPEEDWATCH.  What this will mean is that we will be about the village noting the speed of traffic with "the gun" and we will report any speeding to the Police, who will then write a warning letter to the driver. There are many roads in the village that need this checking, some of which I list here.:

Cambridge Road, - Main Street, - Cahills' Corner, - Egremont Road, - Limes Road.  We know that some people are very concerned about the speed of traffic around Cahills' Corner (also known as Victoria Corner), let's hope that when speeding motorist see us out with the "gun" that they will slow down.

If any-one would like any more information, please do not hesitate to call me on one of the telephone numbers below or E-Mail me.

Regards
