News: Hardwick Exiles

Mike Sherratt writes

Wednesday, 04 January 2006

My parents (Jack and Joyce Sherratt) moved to Sunnybank, Main St, Hardwick in 1957 and lived there until 1963. At that time I (Michael Sherratt) was 12 and my sister (Pamela) was 14 years old. Sunnybank was a 3 bedroom bungalow in which my Father installed central heating himself and also added a concrete drive and brick wall. We both attended school in Cambridge (me at the High School in Hills Road where I played chess every school lunch time for 6 years). We used to walk down the dark country lane to the St Neots Road to catch the bus. My main remembrance was the family that had a small farm at the bottom of our garden. I believe their name was Bond and there were 3 children (Christopher, Wendy and anon) with whom we used to play murder in the dark in their house or a hide and seek game in their field in the dark. I also used to shoot a long bow in their field too. From Google Earth it appears as if this field has now been developed. Another historical note about the village: there used to be a model enthusiast (Mr Curtis) who had a large model railway (the train was large enough to pull children sitting on a carriage). He used to also have a grass tennis court which he was always pleased to let anyone play on it if he could join in. My Father was Village Hall Chairman for a while before moving to Dullingham Newmarket, Peterborough and then South Wales where he passed away. My mother is now 90 and has just moved close to my home in Ascot. My sister married and has 2 children (a bit older than that). She used to live in Baldock and South Wales but has also just moved close to my family. I have lived most of my adult life in Ascot and have 2 children Brioney (to be married in 2006) and William.
