Improvements to countryside rights of way

Wednesday, 18 April 2007

The Countryside Access Team is working towards improved access to the countryside for everyone. It is continuing to make improvements to the network of public paths in Cambridgeshire. Officers are keen to work with local farmers and landowners in the replacing of stiles with kissing gates, where they are required for stock control. Kissing gates provide easier access than stiles for people who are less mobile, disabled, and for those with wheelchairs and pushchairs. This removes barriers to the routes across the county and allows everyone to use the rights of way and enjoy the countryside. The parishes of Woodhurst, Caxton and Great Staughton are all already free of stiles and benefiting from the new gates. The Fen Rivers Way is also nearly free of stiles along its seventeen mile route from Cambridge to Ely, and the parishes of Bourn and Horseheath are currently undergoing gate improvements with the target of being stile-free this year. The team are keen to continue this much needed improvement work in many other parishes and would appreciate the help from local landowners and farmers to do this. If you would like to know more about the gates programme or anything else to do with rights of way in Cambridgeshire, please contact the Countryside Access Team on 01223 717 445 or e-mail cst@cambridgeshire.gov.uk You can also visit http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/countryside
