Hardwick 2000 updateMonday, 01 June 1998 I was pleased to be able to welcome, on behalf of the Community Association, those of you who had come to the meeting on 1st June to offer your help with events to celebrate the millennium. h3. Village survey As reported in the May 1998 entry, many suggestions were received in addition to those on the survey sheet. All of these were considered, though many were not within the scope of responsibility of the Community Association. These suggestions will, wherever possible, be passed onto the appropriate people and committees within the village. It was reported at the meeting that some of the items which were listed on the survey, in particular the sports facilities, are in the process of development. The other items on the list were then considered. A firework display on New Year's Eve was a very popular idea with many who replied to the survey. Enquiries are being made to see if it is possible to book a firework display, and what the cost will be. h3. Millenium Diary It was decided that the Community Association would hold a diary of all events being held during the year. This will be a source of reference to check on any other events which are being planned. It is hoped that this information will avoid disappointment and duplication of effort which can occur if two similar events are held within a short while of each other. The diary will be most useful if planners can enter into it the dates of proposed events early in the planning stage. This diary will not replace the current booking system for the venues within the village. The diary will be held by Shirley Wilson, who can be contacted through the school or on Tel 210148. A copy of the diary will also be printed in the Hardwick Happenings. h3. Circular footpath One of the most popular proposals for facilities to mark the Millennium was the creation of a circular footpath to enable local people of all ages as well as visitors to better enjoy the countryside surrounding the village. It was decided to pursue this project with the aim of opening the footpath in the summer of 2000. If anyone has any comments or suggestion or would like to help work on the project please contact Andy Smith. h3. Celebration Weekend Another popular suggestions was to have a day or weekend of celebrations to include a number of events, to suit all ages within the village. Some of the possibilities which are being considered are: professional displays, village tea party, parade, carnival, cricket match, some celebration of the past and future in Hardwick. h3. Other events The Community Association were sure that there is no way that they could organise a whole year of celebration events. The Community Association consists of representatives of Clubs and Organisations within the village. Therefore all the people on the committee are already involved with one or more of the existing organisations and are committed to support that organisation. No doubt organisations and clubs will need to continue with their normal fund raising events as these provide funds to enable the clubs and organisation to continue their programmes of activities and events. However it is hoped that we can act as a link between those organising events, whether they are special events for the millennium or normal fundraising, to help the village have a memorable and enjoyable year. The next planning meeting for the millennium celebrations will be held on Monday July 13. The next Community Association meeting is on Monday November 16. Both meetings are at 8.00 p.m. and are held in the Community Room at the school. A warm welcome is extended to anyone who wishes to join us at either of those meetings. If you have any suggestions please contact me, Jane Muncey. |
