The results of the election held on 1st May 1997 were as follows: |Andrew Lansley CBE, Conservative|22,572|42.0%| |Tony Gray, Labour|13485|25.1%)| |James Quinlan, Liberal Democrat|13,860|25.8%| |Francis Chalmers, Natural Law Party|168|0.3%| |Robin Page, Referendum Party|3,300|6.1%| |Derek Norman, UK Independence Party|298|0.6%| Conservative majority over the Liberal Democrats 8712 (swing from Conservative to Liberal Democrat: 8.7%). Andrew Lansley has therefore been elected to serve as Member of Parliament for this constituency.
